Online-Lecture and Jury at École des Ponts Paris Tech
[15.6.20] Ali was invited to give a lecture on Berlin’s metropolitan development at École des Ponts Paris Tech. Due to the pandemic the lecture was carried out as a video conference, additionally joined by students of the École d’Architecture de la Ville & des Territoires Paris-Est. Apart from this Ali was part of the online-mid-term and final jury of École des Ponts’ International Studio of the Advanced Master in Spatial Planning and Urban Development programme.



Final jury Urban Systems, TU Berlin
[10.02.2020] On February 13th 2019 Ali’s second-year bachelor and master students will present their final projects for the urban design studio “Urban Systems” at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. The studio investigates how the use of urban systems can be intensified given Berlin’s ongoing growth. Guest critics include Jan Friedrich (Bauwelt) and Dr. Wilhelm Klauser (Initial Design).



Final jury Reverse T-Type 2, TU Berlin
[08.07.2019] On July 11th 2019, 12-14 h Ali's students will present their final projects for the design studio “Reverse T-Type 2” at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. As in a previous semester the studio once again investigates a plinth-tower typology, this time dedicated to temporary living and working. Guest critics are Karim El-Ishmawi (Kinzo), Christoph Fahle (betahaus), Kaye Geipel (Bauwelt) and Carolin Miller (LIN). The results will also be on display at the annual exhibition of the Architecture Institute opening July 12 2016, 17.00 h.

[21.05.2019] On May 21st 2019 Ali will give a lecture entitled "Grand Berlin" on Berlin’s urban past, present and future development at a 5-day workshop dealing with Alexanderplatz carried out by Sciences Po Paris Cycle d’urbanisme, Prof. Dr. Marco Cremaschi, Florent Lévêque and Cécile Oberkampf at Stadtwerkstatt, Berlin.



Panel discussion Heinrich Böll Foundation in Tripoli, LB
[17.12.2018] Ali joined the workshop "Together | To gather - The Space we Shape” organised by the Heinrich Böll Foundation Beirut as a panelist. The workshop took place between 23.11. - 26.11.2018 in Tripoli (LB). It aimed at rethinking how Syrian citizens can rebuild their cities and rural areas. Ali presented the Aleppo City Vision of 2010 and reflected on its legacy and current relevance.



Panel Reactivating the Berlin Mix, Make City Festival 2018
[01.06.2018] On June 23rd 2018, 14.00 to 16.00 h Ali will moderate the panel “Reactivating the Berlin Mix” at Festival centre (Tschechisches Zentrum Berlin) of the Make City Festival 2018 in Berlin. Panelists include Dr. Katharina Borsi (University of Nottingham, UK), Arild Eriksen (Fragments, NO), Tom Hansing (Foundation Anstiftung, DE), Friedrich Passler (AllesWirdGut, AT), Anna Popelka (PPAG architects, AT) and Annet van Otterloo (Freehouse Foudation, NL). The panel will discuss concepts, practices and policies for the successful integration of urban production and living in Berlin.

[12.02.2018] On February 13th 2018, 10-18 h, Ali Saad’s students will present their final projects for the architectural design and research studio “Deep Tower” at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. The studio investigates the typology of a high-rise building dedicated to urban production for an urban area in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Guest critics include Dr. Wilhelm Klauser (Initial Design), Carolin Miller (LIN architests), Christoph Schmidt (ifau) and Dr. Imke Woelk (imkewoelkarchitects).


Europan 14 Germany, National Jury
[13.2.2017] Ali Saad will serve as a member in the German and Swiss national jury of the Europan 14 competition, the largest European competition for architects under 40. This terms topic “Productive Cities” investigates possibilities to integrate production and manufacturing in the urban context. Results will be announced on December 1st 2017.

Feasibility Study Bogensee, Wandlitz
[18.04.2019] An interdisciplinary team led by Bureau Ali Saad and Marta Torres Ruiz was commissioned by the public real estate agency BIM with the challenging task to develop a future vision for GDRs former FDJ-Campus at Bogensee, a huge, listed complex that lies empty since 20 years in the middle of a forest near Wandlitz. Further team members are Treibhaus / Lavaland (landscape), Buro Happold (mobility, utilities, structure, sustainability) and Initialdesign (urban programming).



Second “Open Office” in Königslutter am Elm
[17.12.2018] On November 15th 2018 the second "Open Office” took place in Königslutter am Elm. With the active participation of around 50 local citizens we presented the progress of the project and received very positive feedback. Accessibility, Intensification, Urban Culture and Open Space became the central topics of our strategy. [15.07.2015] An interview with Ali Saad was published by Atelier International du Grand Paris in a publication developed by LIN entitled "Les grands paysages entre dense et léger, intégration et résilience". The interview compares the role of the landscape in Berlin and Paris including their larger metropolitan areas.



Fabrique de la Cité
[20.6.2015] Ali Saad is invited to join the conference "Understanding behavioural changes to keep transforming cities" of the French urban think tank Fabrique de La Cité between July 1st -3rd 2015. He will give an introduction to the history of the Tempelhof airfield.



Publication "Urban Visions and Realities: Two Stories from a Fading City of Play"
[15.05.2015] Ali Saad published an article in the book The Kent State Forum on the City: Berlin edited by Giovanni Damiani, Thilo Folkerts and Paola Giaconia at DPR publishers. The text reconstructs the history of Berlin's urban visions and realities to call for a new spatial vision that is based on the city's heterogeneity. Other contributions come from Christoph Mayer (raumlabor), Jeannette Kunsmann (baunetz), Luka Skansi (IAUV Venezia), Marc Pouzol & Véronique Faucheur (atelier le balto) and others.



Publication "Maitland Pan-Africa Hub"
[07.04.2015] The project Pan-Africa Hub for Cape Town's Maitland neighbourhood is part of the book Cape Town - Densification as a Cure for a Segregated City edited by Dr. Michelle Provoost (INTI Almere) and Prof. Edgar Pieterse (ACC) and published at Nai/010 publishers. The book summarizes the densification projects elaborated during the Cape Town Density Syndicate workshops in 2014, commissioned by INTI, ACC and the City of Cape Town. Ali was in charge of the Maitland project at Uberbau working in close collaboration with NL Architects, the City of Cape Town, ACC, Cape Town Partnerships and others.

[14.02.2019] On February 14th 2019, 10-18 h Ali's students will present their final projects for the design studio “RACK building” at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. The studio develops the typology of the rack: "a low-tech and at the same time permanent structure as a platform for constant change”. Talk at Europan 15 opening in Berlin
[25.3.2019] On March 22nd 2019 the urban economist and theorist Prof. Dr. Dieter Läpple and Ali Saad gave a common talk at the opening colloquium of the Europan 15 “Productive Cities 2” competition at ExRotaprint in Berlin. Their presentation discussed background, arguments and design implications of the term “Productive City”.



Appointment Scientific Committee, Europan Germany
[13.10.2018] Ali was appointed as a member of the scientific committee of Europan Germany for the next two years. His task will be to advise the association’s board on content-related questions concerning the Europan 15 competition “Productive Cities 2”.

[20.05.2018] Ali Saad is invited to join the mid-term reviews of two urban and architectural design studio conducted by Prof. Jim Njoo at Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture Paris-La Villette: The one deals with the transformation of three islands of the Seine, the other with the transformation of an existing, peripheral bus station into a multimodal hub. [12.07.2017] On July 20th 2017, 10-18 h, Ali Saad’s students will present their final projects for the architectural design and research studio “Grand Paris, Grand Berlin III” at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. The studio investigates the densification of a heterogeneous urban area in Berlin-Lichtenberg with small-footprint high-rise towers. The studio was carried out in collaboration with Prof. Jochen Rabe (Einstein Center). Guest critics include Kaye Geipel (Bauwelt), Anne Kockelkorn (ETH Zürich) and Stefan Schautes (HOWOGE). The results of this studio, together with the results of the “Reverse T-Type” studio, will be on display at the annual exhibition of the Architecture Institute opening on July 21st 2017, 15.00 h.

[21.09.2016] Ali Saad published an article in the current issue of Stadtbauwelt "Produktive Stadt". The text deals with historic and current developments on the integration of production and housing in Berlin and features first results of Ali's PhD Research.

The studio is an investigation into the possibility of collective mass housing on a site next to Berlin's Hansaviertel. Brussels Masterclass 2015 "Bridges"
[01.11.2015] Ali will join the Brussels Masterclass 2015 "Bridges" taking place from 2.-13.11.2015 in Brussels as a tutor. Led by master tutors Aglaée Degros and Stefan Bendiks from artgeneering, the two-week design workshop will investigate the potential of metaphoric "bridges" to overcome socio-economic divides within the city. It be will be hosted by Vrije Universiteit Brussels and Université Libre de Bruxelles and carried out in collaboration with students and tutors from KU Leuven, Waseda University Tokyo, IAUV Venezia, TU Berlin, TU Wien, ETSA Barcelona.

[02.05.2015] On Wednesday, May 5th 2015, Ali will give a lecture at a conference entitled "Risques et Résilience" of the scientific council of the Atelier International du Grand Paris at Palais de Tokyo in Paris. Reallabor “Kleinstadtexpert*innen”
[03.11.2020] Bureau Ruiz Saad wird sein Engagement in der niedersächsischen Kleinstadt Königslutter am Elm fortsetzen. Im Rahmen des vom Niedersächsischen Ministerium für Bundes- und Europa-angelegenheiten und Regionale Entwicklung geförderten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojektes "Kleinstadtexpert*innen" wird Bureau Ruiz Saad gemeinsam mit Initialdesign über zwei Jahre eine Vision und Pilotprojekte zur Aktivierung von Königslutters Innenstadt in Form eines "Reallabors" entwickeln. Die im Rahmen des Projekts entwickelten Methoden und Produkte sollen als Modellansatz für den Umgang mit leerstandsbehafteten Innenstädten deutscher Kleinstädte dienen.

Die Präsentation findet an diesem Donnerstag von 10 bis 14 Uhr statt. Unsere Gäste werden sein: Christoph Schmidt (Architekt, Partner am ifau Berlin und Professor an der Peter Behrens School of Arts, Düsseldorf) und Wilhelm Klauser (Architekt und Urbanist, Inhaber von Initialdesign und Experte für urbane Programmierung).



Online-Vorschau "Rourkela - The Double Life of an Indian New Town"
[10.3.20] Alis Buchkapitel über die Planung und Transformation der modernistischen Stahlstadt Rourkela in Indien wurde als Online-Preview (ohne Bilder) in dem Buch "New Towns on the Cold War Frontier" von Crimson Historians & Urbanists (Hrsg.) veröffentlicht. Die Planstadt wurde in den 1960er Jahren vom deutschen Krupp Konzern mit Hilfe der deutschen Bundesregierung errichtet und bildete das größte deutsche Auslandsentwicklungsprojekt nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Das demnächst erscheinende, 1800-seitige Buch ist das Ergebnis eines jahrzehntelangen Forschungsprojekts, das von Crimson konzipiert und initiiert wurde. Es handelt sich um eine reichhaltige und aufregende Sammlung von 24 detaillierten Fallstudien über modernistische New Towns, die weltweit als politische Instrumente während des Kalten Krieges gebaut wurden und sich anders entwickelten als ursprünglich beabsichtigt.

Ali’s book chapter on the planning and transformation of the Indian, modernist steel town Rourkela was published as an online-preview (without pictures) in the book “New Towns on the Cold War Frontier” by Crimson Historians & Urbanists (Eds.). The New Town was built by the German Krupp enterprise with the help of the German government in the 1960s and formed Germany’s biggest foreign development project after World War II. The forthcoming, 1800-page book is the result of a decade-long research project, conceived and initiated by 
Crimson. It is a rich and exciting collection of 24 in-depth case studies of modernist New Towns that were built as political tools during the Cold War all around the world and that developed differently than intended.

[10.09.2018] Bureau Ali Saad and Marta Torres Ruiz (architecture and urban design), Dr. Wilhelm Klauser / Initialdesign (strategy and programme), w+p Landschaften (landscape) and Hoge Architects (tourism) were commissioned with an urban strategy for the inner city of Königslutter am Elm, a city of ca. 16.000 inhabitants located between Wolfsburg and Braunschweig in Lower Saxony, DE. The project deals with fundamental questions of the contemporary development of small cities and the countryside in Germany. Conceived as an "Open Office" a first public workshop, were 45 inhabitants participated in the conceptual development of the project, took place on September 6th 2018. [29.04.2018] On May 7th 2018 Ali Saad will talk on Berlin’s spatial transformations in the framework of the workshop „Atlas der Mutation“ guided by Stefan Shankland and Fabienne Boudon with students of the ENSA Nantes at the Floating University Berlin.

[21.05.2017] On May 24th 2017 Ali Saad is invited to join the final reviews of the urban design studio “Knowledge Mile Pardaguava” at the RISABA Faculty of Architecture and Design in Riga, Latvia.



Final jury and exhibition Grand Berlin II, LIA, TU Berlin

[03.07.2016] On July 21st 2016 the students of Ali Saad will present their results for the research and urban design studio "Grand Paris, Grand Berlin II" at the Laboratory of Integrative Architecture. The studio analyses the Berlin Metropolitan area and investigates strategies for the emerging new housing developments at the fringes of the city. The jury will include Sandra Bartoli (Büro für Konstruktivismus/AbK Nürnberg), Kaye Geipel (Bauwelt), Rainer Hehl (TU Berlin), Anne Kockelkorn (ETH Zürich) and Vesta Nele Zareh (LIN). The results will also be on display the annual exhibition of the Architecture Institute opening on July 22nd 2016, 15.00 h.



Shortlist competition Am Volkspark Berlin-Lichtenberg
[18.12.2015] The proposal of LIN architects in collaboration with Atelier Loidl (landscape) and Bureau Ali Saad (urban concept) was shortlisted in an urban design competition on 900 housing units in Berlin-Lichtenberg commissioned by out by the public housing corporation HOWOGE and the developer VARENTA.



Interview on Cape Town Density Syndicate project
[19.10.2015] The web blog Future Cape Town has published an interviewwith Ali Saad on how density could become a tool for inclusion in Cape Town referring to the project that he elaborated with Uberbau in collaboration with NL Architects as part of the Density Syndicate initiative.



Publication "Aleppo City Development Strategy 2025"
[15.07.2015] Ali Saad and Thomas Stellmach published a book chapter on the experiences gained during their work on the Aleppo City Vision in the book Urban Design in the Arab World edited by Prof. Robert Saliba and published at Ashgate. The piece critically reflects the planning process and the limitations of traditional masterplanning methods in Aleppo, and calls for the acknowledgement of existing dynamics as a base for steering urban development.

[03.06.2015] On June 10th 2015 Ali Saad is invited to join the jury of the mid-term reviews of the architectural design studio "Beijing Bloq" at the chair of Prof. Regine Leibinger / Guest Prof. Matthias Ballestrem. The studio investigates possibilities of density and mixed use on a site in Beijing.
